Graduate Minor

The information systems minor is available to BYU Marriott graduate students who desire to add an information systems component to their graduate experience.

Application Requirements

To apply for the minor, students must comply with the following requirements:

  1. Be admitted to a BYU Marriott graduate program
  2. Obtain the approval of the program director or graduate coordinator of the applicable program office (MAcc, MBA, MPA)
  3. Fill out a declaration form and return to your department advisor

Minor Requirements

Upon acceptance into the minor, students must complete a minimum of nine credits from the following courses (at least six credits must be IS classes):

  • IS 501: Information Systems for Business (only MPA & MBA students may take IS 501)
  • IS 505: Programming for Data Science
  • IS 515: Spreadsheets for Business Analysis
  • IS 520/MBA 614: Spreadsheet & DB Automation Programming
  • IS 555: Data Science Workflows for Organizations1
  • IS 560: Information Security Management1
  • IS 562: Project Management
  • IS 565: Digital Forensics for Organizations
  • IS 566: Advanced Database Management
  • IS 581: Managing a Software Startup
  • IS 582: Tech Strategy and Leadership
  • IS 590R: Seminar in Information Systems (various topics)2

All courses listed above are three credits each.

Notes

  • Students who have taken IS 201 as an undergrad may not take IS 501
  • Students who have taken IS 505 should not take ACC 555 and vice versa
  • IS 505/ACC 555 are a sufficient prerequisite for IS 555
  • ACC 556 is a sufficient prerequisite for IS 566
  • ACC 555 or ACC 556 may satisfy 3 credits of the IS minor
  • Exceptions may be approved by the IS Graduate Coordinator
