The BYU MPA program is designed to equip students with a broad conceptual understanding of the public sector while also developing quantitative and interpersonal skills that will enable them to contribute effectively in their chosen field.
In addition to key core classes, students tailor their program of study according to their interests and goals by selecting a public sector emphasis and going deeper into a chosen skill set. 58 credits are required for graduation.
The BYU MPA core is designed to strengthen skills in areas such as communications, teamwork, decision analysis, accounting, statistics, economics, financial management, and navigating the public sector in general. Students focus their studies on core classes in their first semester. Starting in their second semester, students begin taking classes from their chosen sector and skill set while still continuing to take classes from the core.
Sector classes help students prepare to apply their skills in their chosen field. Emphasis options include:
- Local Government
- State and Federal Government
- Nonprofit
Students can choose any of the first three options regardless of whether they have previous experience; however, the healthcare option is designed primarily for those with education or work experience in healthcare.
In addition to the Core and Sector courses, students will enhance their education by taking additional elective classes in the following areas:
- Nonprofit
- Information Systems minor
- PhD preparation
- Study Abroad
- Grantwell
- Government and Nonprofit Accounting
- Data Science
- Fundraising
- Resource Development
