The world of entrepreneurship can be dog-eat-dog, but contestants found more than hard-nosed rivalry at the International Business Model Competition, held at Brigham Young University and Provo’s Utah Valley Convention Center last month.

After receiving funding through ABC’s “Shark Tank” and selling out of product on QVC, FiberFix is making headlines closer to home. Founded by Brigham Young University student Spencer Quinn, FiberFix recently took the top spot at the Utah Student 25 — the premier recognition program for student entrepreneurs in Utah.

A team of Brigham Young University MBA students won first place in the regional Venture Capital Investment Competition last month by evaluating and making deals with real startups. The group's journey continues this week as they take on ten winning teams from around the world in the Global Finals.

This week teams from 40 schools within 10 countries will compete for more than $150,000 to fund their businesses at the International Business Model Competition. Founded by Brigham Young University and co-hosted by Harvard University and Stanford University, the competition is an opportunity for attendees to get a look inside the entrepreneurial world and will be held May 1-3 at BYU and downtown Provo.

Marriott School of Management student Derek Johnson raised the winning trophy after securing the Founder’s Choice award and the overall win at the Miller New Venture Challenge final. Nine other companies also walked away with prize money totaling $205,000 in cash and in-kind prizes, making this the biggest year in the competition’s history.
