Accounting Society

The Accounting Society is the recruiting arm for the School of Accountancy (SOA) and the umbrella organization for all accounting-related clubs, including Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), and Women of the School of Accountancy (WSOA). It acts as a preparatory club for students considering majoring in Accounting. Most of our members are in the process of taking prerequisite classes including ACC 200, ACC 310, FIN 201, MKTG 201, IS 110, and IS 201 or otherwise preparing to apply to the SOA. The Accounting Society improves the lives and career prospects of its members by promoting information and involvement, professional attitudes and behaviors, scholastic excellence, and a sense of loyalty and community.

Why Participate?

The Accounting Society is the gateway to other accounting relating clubs and the SOA. We host and endorse almost weekly accounting-related club meetings including lecture series and skillset boot camps taught be accounting professionals, faculty members, and, on occasion, students in the SOA bachelors (BAcc) and masters (MAcc) programs here at BYU.

PRE-ACCOUNTING? The Accounting Society helps pre-accounting students explore accounting as a major and potential career path by

  1. connecting them with other students applying for the major and students currently in the program,
  2. co-hosting and endorsing events hosted by other accounting-related clubs,
  3. creating networking opportunities with recruiters and individuals in the accounting field (both alumni and otherwise),
  4. coordinating professional development information sessions on a variety of topics including writing resumes and cover letters and interviewing,
  5. teaching students about the accounting major timeline (including the application process, deciding between the Bachelor’s and Master’s, and exploring potential career paths in accounting), and
  6. providing ample opportunity for earnest students to easily ask questions regarding the Accounting Major and related topics.

ALREADY IN THE SOA? The Accounting Society helps SOA students learn professional skills, build relationships with other SOA students and alumni, continue learning about potential career paths, and give back to the SOA community by

  1. connecting SOA students with pre-accounting students looking for advice on choosing a major and career path, applying for the SOA, and other key decisions regarding their educations,
  2. co-hosting and endorsing events hosted by other accounting-related clubs,
  3. creating networking opportunities with recruiters and individuals in the accounting field (both alumni and otherwise),
  4. coordinating professional development information sessions on a variety of topics including writing resumes and cover letters and interviewing, and
  5. providing ample opportunity for earnest students to easily ask and answer questions regarding the Accounting Career Path and related topics.

The Adam Smith Society is an expansive, chapter-based network of MBA students, professionals, and business leaders who work to promote debate and discussion about the moral, social, and economic benefits of capitalism.

America’s heritage of liberty and global prosperity owes much to innovators and entrepreneurs; those who imagined new products, processes, and organizations; who took risks; and who embraced the freedom to create and build. Historically, captains of industry have not only driven the growth of the economy, but they have also been among the foremost advocates of the free- enterprise system, publicly expounding the broader societal benefits of the market economy. The future prosperity of our nation will depend on tomorrow’s business leaders’ ability to continue this tradition of promoting free markets.

The Adam Smith Society works to provide a venue where this discussion of foundational ideas can be explored and applied to the current economic environment. We believe that MBA students and business professionals should acquire more than just expertise in areas such as management, marketing, and quantitative analysis—as important as these skills are. They should also come to understand—and be able to defend—the nature of the economic system that fosters job creation, wealth generation, the alleviation of poverty globally, and scientific innovation.
