Admission Criteria

Preparing to Apply

Admission to the accounting program is competitive. Historically, 50–75% of applicants are admitted to the Junior Core.

To strengthen your application, we recommend the following:

  • Earn good grades in your prerequisite courses (ACC 200, ACC 310, IS 201). The prerequisite GPA required to apply is a minimum of 3.0. However, admitted students in 2025 typically had prerequisite GPAs between 3.4 and 4.0, with a median of 3.9. We consider your Prerequisite GPA, Total GPA, and BYU GPA from the last 30 credit hours, along with other factors. For example, because students admitted to the accounting program take between three and five challenging accounting courses simultaneously, we consider applicants’ demonstrated ability to succeed while carrying a full semester load. Based on an analysis of what predicts student success in the Junior Core, we weight GPA from the prerequisite courses as follows: ACC 200 (20%), IS 201 (30%), and ACC 310 (50%). Retakes of ACC 200 and IS 201 are penalized one step (e.g., if you retake 200 and get an A, it counts as an A-). Retaking ACC 310 is not penalized. A maximum of one retake is permitted per prerequisite course. Overall, we seek to identify students who will succeed in and enjoy a rigorous set of classes throughout the accounting program. A good “fit” between student and program is beneficial for all parties involved.
  • Substantially complete GE courses.

The School of Accountancy uses rolling admissions, meaning applications are reviewed throughout the year. Students with exceptional prerequisite GPAs may be granted early admission. All other applications will be held and reviewed with the full applicant pool after the June application deadline.

The application is due on the last business day of June at 4:30 p.m. All prerequisites must be completed in order to apply.
