U.S. News Ranks BYU's Business and Law Schools in Top 50

Brigham Young University's business and law schools are among the top 50 in the United States, reports U.S. News & World Report in its "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue, on sale Monday, April 26. Other BYU graduate programs and specialties rank in the top 100 in their categories.

 

 

The Marriott School of Management is ranked 29th for the second year in a row, again tying its highest ranking ever from U.S. News, while the J. Reuben Clark Law School is ranked 41st - up five spots from last year.

"We are pleased to be recognized among the top quarter of law schools in the country" said James D. Gordon III, interim dean of the law school. "Our students continue to be among the most qualified in the nation, and we are pleased that their passage rates on bar examinations are high. It is also gratifying to see that our legal writing program is recognized among the top twenty in the country."

The law school is ranked 17th in the legal writing specialty - up five spots from last year - and 10th for graduates with the least debt. The Marriott School's graduate accounting program is ranked eighth, maintaining its previous ranking.

"These rankings continue to shine a bright light on the quality of our students and the education they receive," said Gary Cornia, dean of the Marriott School of Management. "We are honored to be recognized with so many other top flight business schools. Even so, we believe the best measure of success is the influence for good our graduates have on their organizations and on society."

This year's rankings come from data from surveys of more than 1,200 programs and some 11,000 academics and professionals conducted in fall 2008.

BYU's Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology also did well in this year's U.S. News graduate school rankings, earning top 100 marks in three specialty areas:

-- 58th, chemical engineering specialty

-- 68th, mechanical engineering specialty

-- 79th, electrical engineering specialty

U.S. News ranks graduate programs in the areas of public management, business, education, engineering, law and medicine. These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students. The magazine also ranks programs in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and many other areas based solely on the ratings of academic experts.

The following programs were not newly ranked in this edition, but maintained these rankings:

Romney Institute of Public Management

-- 51st, top public affairs programs

School of Social Work

-- 82nd, top social work programs

David O. McKay School of Education

-- 72nd, top speech-language pathology programs

BYU's College of Nursing

-- 72nd, top nursing programs
