James Hawkes' photograph of a Peruvian boy won "Best Overall Photo" in GMC's International Business Photo Contest.

Latin American Studies major James Hawkes from Payson, Utah, was awarded the “Best Overall Photo” in the first International Business Photo Contest sponsored by the Global Management Center. His photo of a Peruvian boy in Cuzco selling llamas earned Hawkes $50 and some recognition on the GMC Web site where his winning entry is displayed.

“I was surprised when I found out that I won,” Hawkes said. “I called my sister who was with me when I took the picture – it was her camera.”

Winners of the three subcategories each received a $20 cash award. Their photos will also be displayed in the GMC lobby and on the center’s Web site.

Stephen W. Gibson, from the Center for Entrepreneurship in the Marriott School of Management, won first place in the “Faculty/Staff” category. His photo shows a Filipino pizza store owner and graduate from the Academy for Creating Enterprise.

“I’m thrilled, not for myself but for the Academy, because I think this picture will help the academy get more recognition,” Gibson said. The non-profit school, which teaches Filipinos how to start businesses, was created by Gibson and his wife Bette four years ago. “We feel that this school is an errand of the Lord and helps us establish Zion there,” Gibson said.

George Barrus of Provo, Utah, had the winning entry in the “Alumni” category. The photo shows a young South African boy in Johannesburg getting his hair cut at a street-side barber shop. “I thought the center just needed some photos,” Barrus said. “I was surprised when I found out it was a contest and that I had won.”

The winning “Student” photo, which shows a series of mirrored escalators in a mall in Kowloon Tang, Hong Kong, was taken by Audrey Hoopes, a math major from Mesa, Ariz. “I’ve always loved taking pictures and I thought this contest was a good chance to enter one of them,” Hoopes said. “I was surprised when I won.”

GMC Program Coordinator Bethanne Kanzler said they received a lot of good entries and the contest was a great opportunity to introduce the GMC and its programs to the rest of campus.

The GMC plans to sponsor the photo contest again next year. All of this year’s winning photos will be posted on the GMC Web site: https://marriott.byu.edu/gbc.

The Global Management Center is part of the Marriott School of Management. The center elevates international business within the school by internationalizing faculty, students and curriculum at BYU. It also facilitates global outreach with other universities, colleges and businesses in the region. Nearly 15 percent of Marriott School students come from outside the United States and most of the faculty and students have lived abroad. Some 80 percent of students are bilingual, and more than 25 percent speak three or more languages fluently.
