Research Grants
Faculty research is crucial to the mission of the GBC and BYU Marriott. Emerging research generates new questions and new research. The GBC is dedicated to helping BYU Marriott faculty engage in meaningful international research.
See below for options to aid faculty research. For more information, please email the GBC.
International Business
Through our CIBER grant, the GBC can fund up to faculty research projects each CIBER funding cycle year (October-September). Special emphasis will be placed on clusters of international business research conducted in global financial reporting, international finance, global supply chain management, international strategy, and ethics. Funding will typically be in the amount of $1,000 to $5,000 per faculty member and can be used to support travel, a research assistant, software, data, survey expenses, or other relevant costs.
Funding Process
- Choose a research project within your field of research that has an international business scope
- Create a plan of how you will use the desired funding for you research whether it will be for research-related travel purposes or for research-related equipment and personnel
- Complete and submit the Faculty Request for Funding Form.
- The GBC will use the information you provide to obtain approvals from the U.S. Department of Education. Once approved we will let you know through email with instructions of what the next steps are.
If your research involves travel:
- You will need to use a US airline or codeshare partner.(The Department of Education will not approve foreign travel using a foreign carrier. The exception is if you are traveling to Europe, it is possible to use a European based carrier covered under the open skies agreement.) You will need to include flight dates, flight numbers, connections, etc. on the above form. You can submit your planned flights for approval even though they are not purchased yet. If we are covering your flights it is necessary to purchase after we have received approval. Otherwise, you will need to cover your flights with other money.
- This information should be provided at least one month prior to your trip. Only requests submitted through this form will be considered for funding.
- Complete a travel authorization on Chromeriver. In some instances, the GBC will be contributing a piece to your larger budget in which case you will use your department’s account code. In other cases, all costs will be charged to the CIBER grant and you can work with the GBC to create your travel authorization with the right account codes.
- Keep all receipts and upon completion of your project, the GBC will reimburse you and your department for the research costs incurred up to the amount awarded to you if contributing to a larger budget, or will work with you to process your expense report if all charges are directly to our CIBER grant account.
Professional Development
The face of global business is constantly changing. In order for our faculty to keep ahead of the curve, BYU sponsors a variety of development programs to help you learn about new areas of the world or keep knowledge and skills sharp.
Faculty Development in International Business (FDIB)
FDIB programs have been developed to help equip faculty with the knowledge, skills, pedagogical tools, and international experience to enable them to internationalize their courses or research. These programs offered by other CIBER schools and are available to faculty interested in the international side of business and bringing global knowledge into the classroom or internationalizing research. The GBC can partially fund faculty members to participate in an FDIB. Usually, the GBC will pay your registration fee, and all other costs such as flights, visas, and meals should be covered by your department account.
If you are interested in attending an FDIB:
- If you would like to find an FDIB to attend, email Jonathon Wood in the GBC and he can work with you on available options.
- If you already know which FDIB you would like to attend, please complete and submit the Faculty Request for Funding Form.
International Academic Conferences
The GBC can partially fund faculty members to attend international conferences to present papers and develop international research contacts. Faculty should illustrate in their proposal ways in which they might be able to share key learning with other faculty, staff, and students on campus. Faculty should also demonstrate how this opportunity might impact international curriculum development and future academic research possibilities.
If you’re a faculty member interested in presenting at an international business conference:
- Once you have determined that the paper you wish to present has an international scope, complete and submit the Faculty Development in International Business (FDIB): Conference Presenter Request for Funding form.
- Choose a conference within your field that has an international business scope.
- Create a plan of how you will use the desired funding for you research whether it will be for research-related travel purposes or for research-related equipment and personnel
