Biography

Jack Sturgeon is a retired Army lieutenant colonel with 25 years of active duty service. He hails from Rushville, Indiana. He is married to the former Lori Olson of Woonsocket, South Dakota. They have six children and reside in Lehi, Utah.

Jack began his career as a helicopter pilot and later flew airplanes for the Army. He commanded an Assault Helicopter Company and later a Fixed Wing Detachment. He also served as a Foreign Area Officer with emphasis in Western Europe. His wartime service includes Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He also served as the senior U.S. Officer with the United Nations Mission in East Timor. He was responsible for organizing, equipping, staffing and deploying Task Force Odin to Iraq. He led the helicopter rescue operation after Hurricane Katrina as the Joint Task Force Aviation OIC. He had 2 tours as a Professor of Military Science.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, a master’s from Marshall University, and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. He has been to 54 countries. His awards and decorations include the Senior Army Aviator Badge, Air Assault Badge, 6 Meritorious Service Medals and the Legion of Merit Medal.

He became the scholarship, admissions and recruiting officer for Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, Southern Utah University and Utah Tech University in 2009.
