Biography
Ryan Allen joined the Marriott school as an Assistant Professor of Strategy in 2025. His research examines how organizations use data and artificial intelligence in innovation and strategy. One stream of his work explores how firms employ data and experimentation to identify commercially successful innovations, including when data-driven approaches can both help and hinder innovation. Another stream studies the role of AI in strategic decision-making, benchmarking its performance against human judgment in simulations and exploring how people interact with algorithmic advice.
Professor Allen’s research has been recognized with multiple awards, including best paper awards at the Academy of Management and Strategic Management Society. His work has been published in leading academic journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Strategy Science, Strategic Management Journal, and the Journal of International Business Studies.
Before joining BYU, he was on the faculty at the University of Washington and earned his PhD in Business Administration at Harvard University.
