The Marriott Research Fellows program exists to help fulfill the mission of BYU.

STUDY
“This whole experience was out of my comfort zone. We often had to share with the group what we researched and give feedback to each other. This was a scary experience. It was also intimidating to be there as a freshman when some of the other fellows were seniors! I learned that I am capable of speaking up in front of others and that my work is just as valuable as the other fellows.”

FAITH
“This experience has made me think a lot about what truth is. I’ve been able to see how those in the academic discipline seek out truth, and have been able to reflect on how I personally find truth through both intellectual and spiritual means.”
“I did not know what to expect, but I learned that I can do hard things, little by little.”

Program Impact
“I just attended the second of two Marriott Research Fellows student research presentations at a conference. Andrew Malone is starting his junior year. He worked with James Gaskin and Nathan Twyman. He knocked his presentation out of the park. People couldn’t believe he is an undergraduate.”
Bonnie Anderson, BYU Marriott Associate Dean

“Today I presented at AMCIS, the second largest IS conference in the world. I was one of the few undergrad presenters and everyone was blown away by both our research and the fact that BYU has undergrads presenting!
I just wanted to tell you so that you knew that your time at BYU left an impact. Thank you so much for all you taught me in the Marriott Research Fellows program and for sacrificing your time to teach us the principles of research.”
Andrew Malone, BYU Marriott Research Fellow (2021-2022)
“This morning it dawned on me that the things that I really emphasized was that the [Marriott Research Fellows program] was designed to produce miracles in the lives of the students. I reminded them that they needed to see and expect miracles because what they would learn and produce over the 7-week training would be miraculous – awesome and frankly unexpected from freshmen and sophomores.
Here’s to expecting and receiving miracles!”
Erica Miller, 1st MRF Program Manager

Student Experiences

“This program has helped me gain skills such as writing literature reviews, summarizing research, finding related articles, and making connections to become a research assistant. The support and responsiveness you gave was incredible!”
Luke (Finance, Junior)

“It was very well organized and made becoming a research assistant seem achievable.”
Sadie (Pre-Business, Freshman)

“The program met my expectations of learning how to be an RA. It is challenging but rewarding to understand the world of research.”
James (Pre-Business, freshman)
“This program was great. I learned how to do effective research as well as how to expand my critical thinking in a working research environment.”
Charles (Pre-Business, Sophomore)

“I think the structure and organization of the class worked well. I loved the interactive and practice activities that we did—that is how I learned best. This experience prepared me well to be an RA.”
Preston (Pre-Business, Sophomore)
