- 7 weeks of attendance to the training sessions every Friday (generally from 10:00 a.m.–11:50 a.m.) is required.
- There are typically 5 to 8 hours per week of class time and assignments, submitted as paid work time.
- Faculty mentorship begins after the training sessions conclude and will continue for the remainder of the semester or next full semester, involving 5 to 10 hours per week dedicated to research assistant tasks under the direction of the faculty mentor.
- It can last the rest of the semester, into the following semester, or longer based on mutual interest.
- Hours per week and duration of employment depend on what the student and faculty member agree on regarding research projects.
- Yes, it is paid. Students earn $15.00/hour.
- Yes, students are paid and generally receive a modest raise (from $15 during class training to $15.50) when they begin work with a faculty member.
- The Marriott Research Fellows program is not a for-credit class. It is paid, on-the-job training.
- Students will be paid by the hour for attending the class and working on assignments, which means students can charge up to 8 hours per week on class (e.g., fixed day and time, required attendance) and assignment work (e.g., flexible on students’ own time).
- Since this is on-the-job training and not a formal BYU course, the Friday sessions will not appear on students’ class schedules, Canvas, or Learning Suite.
- Students do not need to complete I-9 documentation again if they already have the appropriate documents on file with the university AND have not had any breaks in employment since submitting their original I-9 documents.
- Per BYU Student Employment Policy, undergraduate students are not to work in over 3 jobs or over 20 hours per week during fall and winter semesters.
- Working more than 20 hours per week must be pre-approved by supervisors and the student employment manager.
- Per university policy, working more than 20 hours during the fall and winter semesters could affect the student’s ability to work additional hours on campus in the spring and summer.
