Marriott School Launches Spring and Summer Business Minor

Earning a business minor has never been more convenient than it will be this spring and summer. For the first time, the Marriott School at Brigham Young University is making all minor courses available during the spring and summer — enabling students to complete requirements for a business minor in two terms.

"Our goal is to remove as many barriers to earning a minor as we can," says Joan Young, director of the undergraduate management program. "Many students find that the few business classes it takes to get a minor can really make a difference in landing that first job."

Although the minor requires 22 credits, most students will complete one or more required minor courses as part of their general education classes. For example, a student who has completed Math 110 and Statistics 221 — both general education courses — needs only 16 more credits to earn a business minor. The remaining minor requirements include:

Economics 110Accounting 200Organizational Behavior 320Business Management 300 (finance)Business Management 340 (marketing)Business Management 382 (lecture series, one credit)

This year, all required courses for the business management minor will be offered both spring and summer terms with the exception of Business Management 382, lecture series, which is offered only in the spring.

"One of the challenges we've had is accommodating the high demand for minor courses in fall and winter," explains Young. "During the past five years we've had a more than 80 percent increase in students pursuing business minors. In 2002, nearly 750 students earned business minors."

"It really makes graduates more marketable," says Jay Irvine, undergraduate placement coordinator. "It also helps prepare students for graduate programs like an MBA. As a career adviser, I often recommend a business or technology minor."
