Bio
He wished he would have done music, but didn't think it would support his family. He did Accounting for 2 years because his dad was an accountant, but Dave didn't like it. After his MBA, he joined the musical instruments team at Amazon, where he worked for about a year. He always made videos and music on the side. One year he made videos with his daughter Clare that went viral, and he started making revenue. He went on Ellen, and because was going to LA he had to quit his job and leave Amazon. He then went on the Voice and was stuck in his hotel room for 2 months. He was so excited to finally do music, but knowing so much of success was based on 3 year old daughter, he didn't like the pressure that it put in his family. He and some friends (that also worked at Amazon) started messing around with a drone, they wanted to start a company, which would allow him to keep doing videos. He explored a ton of ideas and eventually landed on the Smarthome space. Based on data they saw on Amazon, the space had tons of room to grow. He put together a business model, got a supplier, built software and launched in 2017 with $200 camera that was supper disruptive. They got tons of PR. He sold 100k units in 3 days, it was the begininng of the race, grew super fast, added bulbs and censors, locks, and full ecosystem. Now he's expanding the ecosystem more and putting more services, AI is a huge push.
How Can You Give?
"I have some good connections, I've earned a lot of respect across the tech industry, fairly well connected, have a unique approach to marketing. What I do best: I try to get people to do things that are different, it's ok to do things that aren't standard. I had the worst GMAT score, was the worst student, nothing special about me, I always felt really stupid, imposter syndrom is a big thing with me. It doesn't matter if you don't have a lot of grades. Passionate about career changing, it's ok to realize that you may have been influenced by things."
