Three Marriott School students were named as this year's Kemper Scholars, an honor that provides each scholar with financial support and summer internships throughout their undergraduate careers.

Typically awarded annually to one student from each of the 17 participating schools nationwide, three of the 23 scholarships presented this year were given to Marriott School students.

The 1999–2000 Kemper Scholars from the Marriott School are Chad Coons and Robert Griffiths, from Mesa, Ariz. and Aaron Karson, from Hermiston, Ore.

"These students were selected for more than their academic success," said Rixa Oman, institutional representative for Kemper at the Marriott School. "We look at the overall picture — academics, leadership and service to the community."

The Kemper Scholars program was created in 1942 by the James S. Kemper Foundation to connect summer business experience with undergraduate academic programs. The program also provides students with significant scholarship support based on financial need. Each scholar is selected for their personal and professional success, intellectual curiosities and desire to use their business careers to benefit society as a whole.

Scholars are typically selected in their freshman year and are placed in summer internships with the Kemper organization for three consecutive summers. Scholarship grants are given based on financial need, from a minimum $1500 merit scholarship to a maximum $8,000 grant per academic year.

This year's Kemper Scholars join six continuing scholars from the Marriott School who were named in preceding years: Jeffrey Corbett, from Fallon, Nev.; Brock Griffiths, from Mesa, Ariz.; Howard Hanks, from O'Fallon, Mont.; Emily Reese, from Provo, Utah; Ryan Westenskow, from Ogden, Utah and Sarah White, from Salt Lake City, Utah.
