The Marriott School at Brigham Young University recently announced its 1999 Eccles Scholars, an honor that gives the eight recipients a tuition scholarship and funding for two or more international experiences.
The grant is awarded jointly to the Marriott School at BYU and the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah by the George S. Eccles and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. The scholarship is designed to enhance international business education offered in the state and to establish programs at the two schools that will make a difference to their students.
"We are excited for the support of the Eccles Foundation in rewarding outstanding students who are slated for international careers," said Ned Hill, dean of the Marriott School. "The courses and international experiences that these students will receive in their programs, combined with their strong international and foreign language backgrounds, will make them very attractive to international companies."
The 1999 Eccles Scholars for the Marriott School are Lisa Jones, Harrison Luvai, Jason Ray, Carlos Alvarez-Jarvis, Jeannette Colonna, Todd McIntyre, Ryan Warr and Robert Weaver.
Eccles Scholars are selected for their potential to become future global business leaders, which is based on their significant international experience, high GPAs and high GMAT scores. As students in the Master of Business Administration program, the scholars will earn an MBA degree with an international emphasis.
The Marriott School's Eccles Scholars have combined work and service experience on six continents. Each student speaks a second language — many speak three or more.
Named for philanthropist and businessman George S. Eccles and his wife Dolores Doré Eccles, the Eccles Scholar Program is one of many initiatives made possible by the Eccles Foundation, which for more than 40 years has made numerous gifts to civic, cultural and educational organizations in Utah.
The Marriott School is located at Brigham Young University, the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States. The school has nationally ranked programs in accounting, business management, information systems, organizational behavior, and entrepreneurship.
The Marriott School is to dedicated to educating men and women of faith, character and professional ability who will become outstanding managers and leaders throughout the world. Approximately 5000 students are enrolled in the Marriott School's graduate and undergraduate programs.
