Clad in an array of costumes—goblins, knights, and even the pope—participants at the 2016 conference of the College of Extraordinary Experiences gathered at the Czocha Castle in Poland to interact with interdisciplinary leaders and learn how to design better experiences.
The residential staff could hear the soft crying of Mrs. C. from down the hall. A victim of dementia, the woman would sit alone by her door at Wisteria Place in Abilene, Texas, weeping and longing for her home and her daughter. She remained distant behind her tears—until Leticia Stucki, the resident recreational therapist and a 2014 BYU grad, discovered an astounding way to reach her: Czechoslovakian polka. The music reminded Mrs. C. of when she was a child and watched her parents dance in the kitchen.
Figuring out the reasons behind the strange things consumers do is Tamara Masters’s passion, one she follows by studying consumer behavior, both in the marketplace and in restaurants. Masters, an assistant professor in the business management department, recently conducted a study that suggests when diners use larger forks, they eat less. Today she shares her thoughts on eating with spatulas, marketing, and consumer goals.
