Professor Receives National Recognition for Public Administration Article

Marriott School Professor Lawrence C. Walters was recognized by the American Society of Public Administration for the best public administration article in 2000. His article,“Putting More Public in Policy Analysis,” which appeared in the July/August edition of Public Administration Review (PAR), won the Louis Brownlow Award for the best article by a practitioner.

“The gratifying thing about the award is not the recognition or the certificate but the fact that people are reading the article and finding it useful,” Walters said.

Walters is an associate professor of public policy analysis at the Marriott School’s Romney Institute of Public Management. “Larry is a very bright scholar who is always investigating innovative topics,” Romney Institute Chair, Robert J. Parsons, said. “He personifies the intent of our faculty to be involved in scholarly research.”

Utilizing a National Science Foundation grant, Walters collaborated on the article with two of his former students, Jessica Miller and James Aydelotte. Their assistance was invaluable, he said.

Walters, a former director of the Romney Institute of Public Management, will be leaving the university shortly as he begins his new job as the director for George Mason University’s Master of Public Administration Program. Members of the Romney Institute said Walters has helped the institute accomplish wonderful things and are confident he will have a positive impact at George Mason University.

The Romney Institute of Public Management, part of the Marriott School’s Master of Public Administration program, was named in 1998 for three-term Michigan Governor George W. Romney. A part of the Marriott School at Brigham Young University, the Romney Institute offers a master’s degree in public administration through both pre-service and executive programs. The Romney Institute has a long tradition of preparing young people for careers in public service and is dedicated to educating men and women of faith, character and professional ability who will become outstanding managers and leaders in public and not-for-profit institutions. The Marriott School is located at Brigham Young University, the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States.
