An associate dean at Brigham Young University's Marriott School was recently honored as Accountant of the Year by Beta Alpha Psi, a national professional accounting and business information fraternity.

W. Steve Albrecht, renowned for his research on white-collar crime and business fraud, was selected as the award recipient for accounting education. Albrecht has authored over eighty articles for professional journals, and he serves as a past president and former regent of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Since 1974, Beta Alpha Psi has honored three individuals each year who have made significant contributions to the accounting profession. The fraternity honored Albrecht for his professional involvement and research that has benefited the accounting profession both locally and nationally.
Coming to BYU in 1977 after teaching at Stanford and the University of Illinois, Albrecht is the Arthur Andersen & Co. Alumni Professor of Accountancy at the Marriott School. Earlier in his career, he worked as a staff accountant for Deloitte & Touche.
In 1997, Albrecht was chosen as one of the 100 most influential accounting professionals in the U.S. by Accounting Today magazine, and in 1998, he received the Cressey Award from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the highest award given for a lifetime of achievement in fraud detection and deterrence.
A recipient of numerous teaching and researching awards, Albrecht has extended his reach outside the university to affect the lives of those within his professional community. As part of Utah's Centennial Celebration, Albrecht was recognized as one of 131 Utahns who have made outstanding contributions or brought unusual recognition to the state. Past president of the American Accounting Association, Albrecht iss also a former member of both the board of regents of the Institute of Internal Auditors and the board of directors of the Utah Association of CPAs.
Albrecht received a bachelor's degree in accounting from BYU and his MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin.
Beta Alpha Psi was founded in 1919 and is designed to encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the field of accounting. The fraternity has over 200 chapters on college and university campuses with over 200,000 members initiated since the fraternity's formation.
