Marriott School Student Receives Three-Year National Scholarship

One Marriott School student recently received a big boost from the Kemper Foundation. Kyle Widdison, a sophomore from Hooper, Utah, majoring in accounting, has been named one of 80 national Kemper Scholars. The honor, which provides financial support and summer internships for three years, will assist Widdison in fulfilling his aspiration to become a successful business leader.

“In my career, I want to be known as somebody who can be trusted,” Widdison said. “To have that kind of career, I need to be involved with a business that reflects these same values.”

The Kemper Scholars program was created in 1942 by the James S. Kemper Foundation to connect summer business experiences with undergraduate academic programs. Scholarship grants are given based on financial need, from a minimum $1,500 merit scholarship to a maximum $8,000 grant per academic year. Scholars are typically selected in their freshmen year and are placed in summer internships with Kemper organizations around the country for three consecutive summers. Scholarship selection is based on academic performance, community service and demonstrated leadership.

“We are very pleased to have such an outstanding addition to the Kemper Scholars from BYU,” said Rixa Oman, institutional representative for Kemper at the Marriott School. “Kyle joins a very select group ofstudents from across the nation.”

The Marriott School will host the national conference for Kemper Scholars and advisors on 23-25 March. This year’s conference will mark the first time it has been held at BYU.

The Marriott School is located at Brigham Young University, the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States. The school has nationally ranked programs in accounting, business management, information systems, organizational behavior and entrepreneurship. The mission of the Marriott School is to educate men and women of faith, character and professional ability who will become outstanding managers and leaders throughout the world. Approximately 3,000 students are enrolled in the Marriott School’s graduate and undergraduate programs.
