Marriott Alumni Magazine Wins Award for Illustration

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education awarded the Marriott School’s alumni magazine a Gold Medal of Excellence Award at a recent district conference in San Francisco. The Marriott Alumni Magazine was honored with the top award in the “Outstanding Communications: Illustration” category.

“Receiving this award is a nice honor for the Marriott School and our external relations staff,” says Lee T. Perry, associate dean of the Marriott School. “We are lucky to have one of the top alumni magazines of any business school in the country.”

CASE is an international professional organization that recognizes top institutions in the fields of alumni relations, communications and development. It honored the school’s magazine for an illustration in the Summer 2004 edition, titled, “Summer Reading: Some of your favorite faculty pick their favorite books.” The illustration, created by Elvis Swift, accompanied a feature in which Marriott School faculty shared their favorite professional and pleasure books.

“When we were designing the summer edition of the Marriott Alumni Magazine, we wanted something to portray a summer feel to our readers,” says Melody Murdock, former editor of Marriott Alumni Magazine. “We wanted an illustration that would encourage our readers to take some time out of their busy schedules and relax with a good book.”

Even though Swift’s illustrations had never been used before in the Marriott Alumni Magazine, Murdock and her team were confident in his ability to portray the message. “Swift’s illustration gave a unique, crisp feel to the magazine that fit perfectly with our theme,” Murdock says.

The Marriott Alumni Magazine competed with other institutions from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah. All entries were produced between July 1, 2003 and June 30, 2004.

The Marriott Alumni Magazine is published three times a year by the Marriott School of Management. The publication is mailed to approximately 40,000 alumni, faculty, friends and advisers to the school, as well as members of the Management Society, the school’s professional alumni networking organization.

The Marriott School is located at Brigham Young University, the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States. The school has nationally recognized programs in accounting, business management, public management, information systems, organizational behavior and entrepreneurship. The school’s mission is to prepare men and women of faith, character and professional ability for positions of leadership throughout the world. Approximately 3,000 students are enrolled in the Marriott School’s graduate and undergraduate programs.
