Emeritus Professor Honored for Lifetime Service

Emeritus Professor Doyle W. Buckwalter received the lifetime service award from the Utah Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) on 4 June for his 30-plus years of service to students at the Marriott School of Management, the Romney Institute of Public Management and the ASPA.

Buckwalter came to Brigham Young University in 1968 where he taught international relations in the Political Science Department. Five years later, he moved to the college of business to become a part of the Institute of Government Service—precursor to the Romney Institute of Public Management.

During his career at the Marriott School, Buckwalter served as the director of the Romney Institute’s internship program and established ongoing internship opportunities for Romney Institute students with local and national organizations.

“I consider my experience at BYU a remarkable opportunity,” Buckwalter said. “One of my great thrills is following the career paths of Romney Institute graduates and observing the marvelous contributions in their professional, gospel and family settings.”

Buckwalter—the recipient of the Boy Scouts of America’s Silver Beaver Award, the highest award an adult scouting volunteer can receive—has inspired many students to serve their communities by pursuing careers in public administration.

The Romney Institute of Public Management, part of the Marriott School’s Master of Public Administration program, was named in 1998 for three-term Michigan Governor George W. Romney. A part of the Brigham Young University’s Marriott School, the Romney Institute offers a master’s degree in public administration through both pre-service and executive programs. The Romney Institute has a long tradition of preparing young people for careers in public service and is dedicated to educating men and women of faith, character and professional ability who will become outstanding managers and leaders in public and not-for-profit institutions. Brigham Young University is the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States.
