“Bailey is a man of great integrity and high moral principles,” said Ned C. Hill, dean of the Marriott School. “He is a creative genius who has built a profitable company that has adapted well to the modern information age.”

The International Executive of the Year Award was established by the Marriott School in 1974 to honor annually an outstanding executive from the public or private sector who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and high moral and ethical standards.

Prior to his appointment as CEO in 1994, Bailey spent 21 years with Williams, a multi-billion dollar energy and high-technology company based in Tulsa, Okla. Under his leadership, Williams reported an 88percent increase in first-quarter earnings this year. The company has also created a total shareholder return of822 percent over a nine-year period which ended in 1999. By comparison, the Standard & Poor’s 500 total return for the same period was 449 percent.

A registered engineer, Bailey is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers, which selected him as its Outstanding Engineer in Management in 1989. He serves on the boards of the American Petroleum Institute, Apco Argentina, the National Alliance of Business and the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America.

In addition to leading growth at one of the country’s largest oil and gas companies, Bailey has been closely involved with several not-for-profit organizations including the United Way and Salvation Army. He is also a member of the board of trustees at the University of Missouri-Rolla and has served as chairman of the board of trustees at the University of Tulsa. In 1995, Bailey was the board chairman of Tulsa’s Philbrook Museum of Art.

In 1964, Bailey graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy—known today as the University of Missouri-Rolla. In addition, he completed a degree in management development in 1978 from Harvard University. Bailey has been inducted into Oklahoma State University’s, the State of Oklahoma’s and the University of Tulsa’s engineering halls of fame.

The Marriott School is located at Brigham Young University, the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States. The school has nationally ranked programs in accounting, business management, information systems, organizational behavior and entrepreneurship. The mission of the Marriott School is to educate men and women of faith, character and professional ability who will become outstanding managers and leaders throughout the world.
