On a warm May evening in 1995, Christian Brinton and his high-school soccer teammates gathered for a half-time pep talk during the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Their team was losing, and their coach was not happy about it. Through the course of the half-time speech, their coach quickly escalated from being unhappy to outraged, punctuating his profanity-laced verbal assault by smashing his clipboard on the ground.

It’s a touchy subject—right up there with politics and religion. But obesity reaches high enough numbers and dollars that it can’t be quietly swept under the rug. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 34 percent of U.S. adults aged 20 and older are obese, a looming figure that’s more than doubled since the late 1970s.1 The figure has recently settled after a quarter-century of steady growth, leaving the majority of U.S. adults—approximately 66 percent—overweight or obese, with health care costs continuing to rise with no end in sight.2

Years of planning and effort came to fruition on 24 October 2008 when President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the 76,000-square-foot N. Eldon Tanner Building Addition.
It added a slice of humor to Cherie Jones’ day when a co-worker spilled an entire Big Gulp on her keyboard. “I was totally laughing,” she recalls. Her co-worker wasn’t. Jones, a 2001 MAcc graduate and business tax auditor for Loudon County, Virginia, says her colleague panicked as she searched for napkins to salvage the keyboard. Big Gulp or deli sandwich, Jones’ co-worker isn’t the only one whose workstation doubles as an eatery.
At all levels of government, we need more men and women who are willing to speak the truth, face the facts, take a long-term perspective, and prepare our country and its citizens. Many of these challenges are unprecedented in size, scope, complexity, and potential impact.
David Truscott is a do-it-yourself kind of guy. The Washington state native builds his own furniture, does his own home remodeling, and handcrafts violins that fetch upward of $3,000 apiece. What’s more, the violin maker and auditor recently developed an international supply chain that is expected to boost instrument production to nearly $250,000 this year. Not bad for a twenty-four-year-old.
In conjunction with the Tanner Building Addition Dedication and the National Advisory Council conference, the school honored Richard E. Marriott and J.W. Marriott Jr. at a banquet 24 October 2008. President Henry B. Eyring, President Cecil O. Samuelson, and Dean Gary C. Cornia presented the brothers with Distinguished Leadership Awards.
