The BYU Marriott School of Business will welcome Colonel Trigg E. Randall as the new chair for the Department of Aerospace Studies and head of BYU’s Air Force ROTC, effective July 14, 2025, following the retirement of Colonel Jonathon Creer.

Randall graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in Asian studies and a minor in Japanese and earned his Air Force commission through BYU’s Air Force ROTC program in 2001. As a command pilot with over 4,300 flight hours in the C-130, KC-10 and T-1, he flew missions around the world, including almost 500 combat hours in Afghanistan. He also served as an exchange officer with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the United Kingdom, where he trained both RAF and NATO personnel in air operations and leadership. Randall’s other roles have included leading the US Transportation Command’s contingency planning division, where he helped to develop plans to support military operations regionally and globally, and serving as the regional security studies director and mobility air forces chair at the Maxwell Air Force Base’s Air University in Alabama.
Most recently, Randall led the 515th Air Mobility Operations Group based at Yokota Air Base in Japan, overseeing a team of 873 personnel in 13 locations across six countries. He organized command and control while also managing aerial and port maintenance for 13,000 missions each year. Randall also served as the senior representative for Air Mobility Command in the Western Pacific region.
“I am thrilled to be coming home to BYU where I learned the tools that launched my Air Force career,” Randall says. “BYU holds a special place in my heart, and I look forward to working with so many wonderful students, cadets and faculty.”
Randall will take over from Colonel Creer, who served for three years as department chair. “We are tremendously grateful for Colonel Creer’s exceptional leadership of the Brigham Young University Air Force ROTC program,” Madrian says. “Colonel Creer and the whole Air Force ROTC cadre provide excellent training to our Air Force ROTC cadets, as evidenced by the many recognitions they receive and the assignments they are given after they commission. Because of their efforts and those of their predecessors, we are fortunate to host one of the top Air Force ROTC detachments in the country.”
