BYU Establishes Institute of Financial Services

Preparing for the opportunities and challenges of an evolving financial services industry, Brigham Young University announces the establishment of a new institute of financial services. The new institute, named for former Bank of America executive and Silicon Valley developer H. Taylor Peery, will be housed at BYU's Marriott School of Management.

The H. Taylor Peery Institute of Financial Services will help recruit faculty, develop new course material and fund research. It will also provide students with employment opportunities, internships and field studies in banking, financial planning, investing, insurance, real estate and risk management.

Formation of the institute is made possible by a $3 million endowment provided by Peery's children — Nancy Peery Marriott and her husband, Richard, and Richard Peery and his wife, Mimi. The Peery endowment adds to an existing $1 million endowment created by Ron and Kaye Gunnell and donors to the school's insurance, risk management and financial services program.

Marriott School Dean Ned C. Hill announced the new institute at a private banquet last week honoring H. Taylor Peery. "The financial industry has been greatly impacted by technology, new financial instruments, deregulation and globalization," Hill said. "The Peery Institute will help us create programs and curricula to prepare hundreds of students each year to enter the world Taylor Peery helped create."

"We're grateful for the generous contributions that honor H. Taylor Peery," said Merrill J. Bateman, president of BYU. "Student's going through the Peery Institute will have a global reach and a tremendous impact for good."

One of the first Stanford MBA graduates, Peery recognized the importance of education and applying class-room learning to every aspect of life. He followed a simple motto, "Grasp life by learning all you can."

"We deeply appreciate this unique naming opportunity that fits so beautifully with our father's beliefs, talents and example," said Nancy Peery Marriott. "Future generations will benefit from his humility and talents. The institute will build and bless many lives."

The Marriott School is located at Brigham Young University, the largest privately owned, church-sponsored university in the United States. The school has nationally and internationally ranked programs in accountancy, business management, information systems, organizational behavior and entrepreneurship. The mission of the Marriott School is to educate men and women of faith, character and professional ability who will become outstanding managers and leaders throughout the world. Approximately 3,000 students are enrolled in the Marriott School's graduate and undergraduate programs.
