W. Steve Albrecht, associate dean of Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management, has not only been president of the American Accounting Association and an expert witness in the Lincoln Savings and Loan fraud case but also one of the university’s top faculty. Albrecht was recently recognized with the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award, BYU’s most prestigious faculty honor.

“I get great satisfaction training students to be future leaders in business, in their homes, in the church and in the community,” Albrecht said.
Recognized by both faculty and students as an inspiring educator and a voracious worker, Albrecht has amassed a trove of professional and teaching honors, including teaching awards from Stanford University, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Illinois.
Notwithstanding his prominence and his many opportunities to teach at other top universities, Albrecht is more than content with his job at BYU. “You couldn’t blow me out of here with a cannon,” he said. “BYU provides opportunities and rewards that don’t exist at other places.”
Albrecht sees the ability to integrate insights from the restored gospel of Jesus Christ into the classroom as the greatest opportunity at BYU. He also recognizes the responsibilities that accompany the opportunities.
“I have never viewed integrating the gospel into my classes as being an excuse for being less rigorous. On the contrary, I think we have an expectation of excellence here at BYU.”
The Maeser Award further recognizes Albrecht’s consistently high evaluations from students, his myriad of academic and professional achievements, including his contributions to the Marriott School’s nationally recognized accounting curriculum, and his recent book Accounting Education: Charting a Course Through a Perilous Future.
