Cameron Moll’s first big break in tech literally landed in his lap. As a BYU student in the late ’90s, Moll never expected that the insert that fell out of The Daily Universe would eventually lead him to a career spanning the Church, Meta, and beyond. In a world just waking up to the web, Moll was already one step ahead.
By the time he spotted the job ad for a web-design position at Internet Development Inc. (IDI), Moll had already been building his skills. “I wanted to know what made the web tick,” says Moll, who was captivated by the emerging digital world. While working as a campus computer-lab assistant, he taught himself HTML—and when the president of BYU Marriott’s Finance Society asked him to create a club website, Moll was ready. “It was one of the first websites I ever created,” he says, “and while it was embarrassingly simple and rudimentary, it was a start.”
That early project helped him land the job at IDI, where he designed online sites for clients including Tupperware and Melaleuca while also pursuing his degree in management at BYU Marriott. Moll was a father of three and had risen from junior web designer to creative director by the time he graduated in 2003. He notes, “Those four years laid the foundation for everything that would follow in my career, now spanning 25-plus years designing for the web.”
That foundation enabled Moll to take his talents to the Church, where he brainstormed, conceptualized, and launched the app Mobile Member—now known as Member Tools. “We never could have imagined it would blossom into the app used today by stakes, wards, and branches throughout the Church,” he says.
Ready to channel his skills into something entrepreneurial, Moll moved on from church headquarters to found Authentic Jobs, an online job board to connect designers and developers with companies. Authentic Jobs was acquired in 2016, just as Moll was heading into his own new chapter at Facebook, where he led design for its events platform used by more than 700 million people to host private and public events.
Moll’s post-Facebook career included leadership roles at Pendo.io and Buzzsprout, the world’s largest paid podcast hosting platform. Since 2020 he has served as chief design officer for Desquared. He also shares his expertise as a speaker at design conferences, Fortune 500 companies, and universities, including a recent visit to user experience students at BYU–Idaho.
For Moll, success isn’t just about being ready, it’s about having the right support system. “I couldn’t be more grateful for the role that BYU played in teeing up everything that would unfold in my career,” reflects Moll, who lives in Sarasota, Florida, with his wife, Suzanne. They are the parents of five sons. “If my time at BYU Marriott laid the foundation for my career,” Moll says, “Suzanne made possible every ounce of success I’ve achieved.”
