From a young age, Melissa Larson developed a love of reading and learning, and set the goal of graduating from a university. However, as the first person in her family to pursue higher education, she wasn’t sure what it would take to achieve her goal.
Throughout my life I’ve spent countless summer weekends at my parents’ cabin in the Uinta Mountains, where in the early days there was no electricity or indoor plumbing and almost every evening was spent playing games around the kitchen table until the generator would run out of gas.

Last August I was at a landfill site in So Paulo, Brazil. It had been a dump where people sorted through garbage looking for valuable items so they could put food on their tables.
One of the most important projects in my ongoing education is training my emotions and recognizing how vital they are in doing good work. We don’t check our emotions at the door when we come to work. And we take the emotional aftertaste of work back into our homes.
