Making Their Mark: Research Highlights

For her research on enhancing human-machine collaboration in decision-making, Bekki Brau, assistant professor of marketing and global supply chain, was a finalist for the Chan Hahn Best Paper Award, given by the Academy of Management, and for the Jack Meredith Best Paper Award, given by the Journal of Operations Management.

Associate professor of marketing Glenn Christensen earned the Bradford-Osborne Research Award for his work on racial discrimination in financial loan services.

Ryan Elder, professor and department chair of marketing and global supply chain, was selected as a Marketing Science Institute Scholar, an honor for mid-career marketing academics who drive research.

At the 7 Experiences Summit, ExDM professors Brian Hill, Camilla Hodge, and Peter Ward and undergraduate research assistant Samantha Smith won Best Presentation for their work on museum experiences for middle school students.

Mark Johnson and Jason Kotter, both assistant professors of finance, earned the Best Paper Award at the Financial Research Association’s conference. Kotter was also featured in a CNBC segment discussing industrial banks in Utah.

Tom Meservy, department chair and professor of information systems, received the Association for Information Systems Technology Challenge Award for cocreating AuthorConnect, a tool for connecting conference attendees with authors.

Trent Williams’s paper on post-earthquake resilience in Haiti was a finalist for the Academy of Management Journal Impact Award, and his work on refugee entrepreneurship won Best Paper at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Williams, an associate professor of entrepreneurship, was also named division chair over professional development by the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management.

Trailblazers in Tech and Accounting

Bonnie Anderson, associate dean and professor of information systems, received the 2024 Pathway Champion Award from the Women Tech Council for her impact as a mentor, teacher, and researcher. Anderson has spent 23 years championing opportunities for women in STEM while also pioneering technology research.

SOA teaching professor Melissa Larson received the Women to Watch: Experienced Leader award from the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants for her notable impact in accounting.

Accounting Awards

Cassy Budd, a teaching professor in the SOA, was inducted into the American Accounting Association’s (AAA) Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Hall of Honor for her efforts toward the advancement of accounting education and research.

The AAA selected associate professor Tim Seidel for the KPMG Outstanding Published Manuscript Award and assistant professor Ryan Sommerfeldt for the Management Accounting Section Midyear Meeting Outstanding Paper Award.

David Wood’s recognition as one of Accounting Today’s Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting is a testament to his prolific work as an accounting professor. Wood won the Best Conference Paper Award at the Review of Accounting Studies conference in December 2023.
