Wasatch Cup Healthcare Leadership Case Competition
2023 Wasatch Cup
The 2023 Wasatch Cup brought together 48 students and 12 coaches from 4 different universities to solve a modern healthcare problem located in the Wasatch Front and compete for the grand prize of $5,000. 12 teams represented students and faculty from Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University – Idaho, the University of Utah, and Utah Valley University. Each team was required to represent at least 2 different colleges within their university to create an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. 12 colleges from the 4 universities were represented.
The teams were presented with the task of advancing the mission, vision, and values of St. Mark’s Hospital located in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were given 2 weeks and a variety of public data sources to create a proposal for the executive team of St. Mark’s Hospital. Teams were graded on 5 categories: opportunity identification, clarity of proposed strategy, viability of proposed strategy, use of research and responsiveness to changing healthcare dynamics, and overall presentation and Q&A.

After the teams received grades and feedback, 3 teams were selected to present in the final round to the executive board of St. Mark’s Hospital:

The finalists presented on strategies regarding mental health integration, artificial intelligence integration, and cardiovascular service lines. The winning team represented students from the BYU College of Nursing and College of Life Sciences. The second-place team represented students from the BYU School of Family, Home, and Social Sciences and the Marriott School of Business. The third-place team represented students from the University of Utah’s Eccles School of Business.
