Wasatch Cup Healthcare Leadership Case Competition

Rules

Competition Format

The competition will compose of two rounds. The preliminary round will feature three flights, each flight with their own judging panel. Judging panels will be comprised of a wide array of healthcare industry professionals, predominantly from the Wasatch Front. Previous judges have ranged from seasoned executives to early careerists.

The flights and order of presentations will be randomly assigned. The judging panels will score each team within their flight and the team with the highest score from each flight will proceed to the final round. The highest scoring team in each flight will be announced at the lunch in between the preliminary and final round. Teams that were not selected as finalists and preliminary round judges are welcome and encouraged to stay and watch the final presentations.

Finalist teams will be given time to modify what they say the in their presentation based on preliminary round performance and coach and judge feedback but are not allowed to modify the content on their slides. Finalist teams will then present their solutions to the executive team of the sponsoring organization. Finalist judges will use the same scoring method to evaluate the final three teams and select a winner.

Prize Money

1st place team - $5,000

2nd place team - $2,000

3rd place team - $1,000

Presentation Rules

There are several important guidelines about the presentations. Because this is the only item the judges will evaluate, it is important to follow all rules and guidelines

  • While there is no maximum or minimum slide count, there is a hard cutoff after 15 minutes of presenting. All 15 minutes do not need to be filled. It is best to be clear and concise
  • To avoid bias, you may not include any identifiers (clothes, logos in presentation, etc.) that will inform the judges of your university. You may include your names on the presentation, but not your major or university
  • Sound effects and video clips are not allowed in the presentation. Teams will also not have access to Wi-Fi during their presentation
  • Graphics are allowed

Although not every team member must speak during the presentation, each must be present at the front of the room and be available to answer questions.

  • You may use notecards during your presentation
  • You may bring copies of your slide deck to give to the judges, but this is not required
  • Props and/or displays are not allowed
  • Judges will be allowed to ask questions about the presentation and its content for 15 minutes following the close of the presentation
  • Teams presenting in the final round may not change their presentation in between rounds, but may change what they say in the presentation

Because the case is rather ambiguous, we have informed the judges to recognize that there will be a wide variety of solutions. They will be evaluating in each of the following 5 categories, each weighted equally:

Opportunity Identification
Clarity of Proposed Strategy/Tactics
Viability of Proposed Strategy/Tactics
Use of Analytics and Quantitative Research & Responsiveness to Changing Healthcare Dynamics
Presentation/Teamwork/Q & A
