BYU Big 12 Healthcare Leadership Case Competition

FAQ

I’m interested in participating, how do I get started?

  1. Assemble a Team
Form a team of four students from your university. The team must be interdisciplinary, with members from different majors/programs.
  2. Select a Coach
Choose a coach who is either a university professor or an industry professional. Your coach should be prepared to have multiple discussions with your team (whether virtual or in person), helping you plan, identify weaknesses, and suggest revisions to your presentation. Ensure they understand this time commitment. Your coach must also accompany your team to the case study competition in person.
  3. Register Online Using This Website
During registration, your coach will express the team’s interest in competing, state the university being represented, and give the names and respective majors of the team members.
  4. Research the Healthcare Industry
In preparation for receiving the case study, research the healthcare industry to understand its dynamics, key players, and key issues.
  5. Have Your Coach Contact Dr. Berrett and His Team with Questions
Should you have any questions, please feel free to have your coach reach out to Dr. Berrett.

Why should I compete?

Case study competitions give students real-world experience, allowing them to apply classroom principles to practical problems and present persuasive solutions to industry professionals. Participants gain valuable feedback, strengthen their resumes, and demonstrate skills attractive to employers and graduate programs.

These events also offer powerful networking opportunities with judges, coaches, and peers—connections that have led past participants to internships and career advancements. By engaging directly with experienced professionals, students can expand their networks and accelerate their career paths.

What should I wear to the case competition?

Because presentations will be given to executives in a formal event, we ask that students dress in business professional attire. The judges and coaches are encouraged to match the level of attire.

What should I do when I’m not presenting?

There are several great ways to spend your time while your team is not presenting. If you haven’t presented yet, feel free to use this time to rehearse and refine your presentation with your team and coach. After your presentation, you may also talk as a team and evaluate areas of success and areas of improvement.

You’re also welcome to explore BYU’s beautiful campus! Just be sure to return to the Harman Building in time for your presentation and for lunch.

How will the presentations be scored?

Because the case is rather ambiguous, we have informed the judges to recognize that there will be a wide variety of solutions. They will be evaluating in each of the following 5 categories, each weighted equally:

  • Opportunity Identification
  • Clarity of Proposed Strategy/Tactics
  • Viability of Proposed Strategy/Tactics
  • Use of Analytics and Quantitative Research & Responsiveness to Changing Healthcare Dynamics
  • Presentation/Teamwork/Q & A

The judges will fill out a scorecard following your presentation and include feedback. These scorecards will be given to your coaches to deliver the feedback.

How much does it cost to participate?

Participation in the competition is free! The BYU Healthcare Leadership Collaborative will cover all participation fees for teams and coaches. Teams are responsible for travel and lodging costs. Please reach out for more information on lodging.
