With her boss more than 5,000 miles away, Allison Harker took charge of projects to impact a Portuguese company from her apartment in Provo. As she remotely completed an internship, the human resource management (HRM) junior applied the skills she had learned at the BYU Marriott School of Business to make a difference across oceans.

Case competitions test students’ business skills, work ethic, and stamina, but few people find that case competitions bring out their emotional side. However, Liz Dixon often sheds joyful tears as she watches her students present their solutions and find success at international case competitions. Through her work as an adjunct professor of management communications at the BYU Marriott School of Business, Dixon empowers students to excel in many different areas, and she loves seeing them succeed.

Students from the BYU Marriott School of Business attend the Purdue Human Resources case competition every year, but this year’s competition led to an especially exciting result. BYU Marriott’s undergraduate and MBA teams both took first place in their divisions. Two students, Amelia Phillips and Sam Porter, also won the award for the best question-and-answer responder. As teams adapted to the new virtual format, they worked through problems that will be applicable in their future careers.

So, what happens when someone has not one but two career options that bring them joy? If you’re Tracy Maylett, the decision is easy: do both. As the CEO of a consulting company and a BYU Marriott School of Business adjunct professor, Maylett has found ways to bless lives in the worlds of both business management and education.

Many people see the human resource department at a company as the group of people who are responsible for hiring new employees and providing health and wellness benefits. While HR employees are certainly part of those processes, students from the human resource management (HRM) program at the BYU Marriott School of Business are showing that there’s more to HR than a performance review or a benefits presentation.

She might be dealing with a last-minute cancellation or organizing presentations while stuck at a Starbucks in a snowstorm, but Anne Sledd always finds creative ways to make things happen. In her role as a department assistant for the management department at the BYU Marriott School of Business, Sledd also serves as an on-the-spot events coordinator, with a goal of creating moments of connection for everyone associated with the school.

Every day, people make dozens of morally relevant decisions—often without even realizing it. Whether choosing how to spend their time, whom to help (and how much), or simply how to react to a difficult coworker, their daily decisions influence the kind of person they ultimately become. Isaac Smith designs his research to better understand how to help people refine their character. As a BYU Marriott School of Business assistant professor of organizational behavior and human resources, Smith hopes his research will help unlock the power of human potential and encourage people to become their best moral selves.

For many college students, graduation day is a time to celebrate the end of a hard-earned degree and the beginning of a new journey. For BYU Marriott graduate Becky Darrington Rogers, graduation day also happened to coincide with a doctor’s appointment for her first pregnancy—a reason to celebrate more than just earning her diploma. Now twenty years later, as a successful businesswoman and a devoted mother, she strives every day to balance her career and her family.

For many people, food is a language of comfort, love, and bonding. Clarissa Keller, a senior studying human resource management at the BYU Marriott School of Business, shares her love through plates of food, days at work, and conversations with friends. Keller aims to translate this language of love across every aspect of her life, including her work as a future HR professional.

When work meetings shifted online this spring, some may have noticed new standouts among their colleagues. According to recent research from BYU, members of virtual teams identify leaders in significantly different ways compared to members of in-person teams.

Growing up in a small town in Oregon, BYU Marriott alum Josh Spencer never imagined that he’d one day work for one of the largest investment banking firms in the world. However, through his own hard work and support from the BYU Marriott human resource management (HRM) program, Spencer is now a human resource business partner at Goldman Sachs.

BYU Marriott School of Business dean Brigitte C. Madrian has announced the appointment of Bonnie Anderson as the school’s newest associate dean. Anderson takes over for previous associate dean Keith Vorkink on 18 May.

Most BYU Marriott graduates go through weeks of rigorous recruiting before landing a job, but Clark Anderson, a 2016 BYU Marriott human resources management (HRM) graduate, recruited himself into his current job as a virtual partner account manager at Cisco.

BYU Marriott HRM teams took home first-place and fourth-place finishes at the Utah Society of Human Resource Management competition.

BYU Marriott professor of organizational behavior and resources Lisa Jones remembers filling out PhD applications like it was yesterday. “I’m an MBA who doesn’t want a BMW,” she wrote.
