Cash prizes totaling six figures were at stake for the top 20 BYU student-run companies participating in the Miller New Venture Challenge Final hosted by the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology.

Led by SimpleCitizen, a total of five Brigham Young University startups came out on top at the annual Utah Entrepreneur Challenge.

Energetic and optimistic described both the students and startups present at Utah Startup Marketplace hosted by the Rollins Center.

The title of 2015 Student Entrepreneur of the Year and over $16,000 was awarded last week by the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology.

Marriott School of Management student Derek Johnson raised the winning trophy after securing the Founder’s Choice award and the overall win at the Miller New Venture Challenge final. Nine other companies also walked away with prize money totaling $205,000 in cash and in-kind prizes, making this the biggest year in the competition’s history.

Brigham Young University’s student entrepreneur team Genius Security took home first place and a cash prize of $3,000 at this year’s Business Model Competition hosted by the Marriott School of Management’s Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology.

Beating out more than 1,600 applicants from 37 countries, Brigham Young University student Spencer Quinn took home the 2013 Global Student Entrepreneur Award with his repair tape company FiberFix. He also walked away with $150,000 in cash and in-kind business services from Entrepreneurs’ Organization, a global network of more than 7,300 business owners.

The Marriott School of Management held its third annual entrepreneurship week this fall, reaching out across campus to engage more students in entrepreneurial efforts.
