This is a very important part of the application. Regardless of your GPA, we recommend that you spend a considerable amount of time answering the questions. We also recommend that you first type your essay into a word processing program, save your essay, and then copy and paste it into the application in the essay box below. If you logout, your application will be saved, but not formally submitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accounting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cover the points below in an essay of 100\u2013500 words.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell us more about who you are outside of GPA and academic accomplishments. You may consider addressing some of the following topics:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tell us something unique about yourself that we cannot get from your grades alone.\u00a0In other words, what differentiates you from every other School of Accountancy applicant?\u00a0 As examples, tell us about your background, experiences, challenges, attitude, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, motivation, and so forth.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Briefly tell us why you want to be a BYU&nbsp;Marriott accounting major.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell us about the nonacademic demands on your time while you have been an undergraduate student. Make sure you directly address the essay prompt for the program<em>&nbsp;<\/em>to which you are applying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Show the committee who you are\u2014differentiate yourself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider essay basics: (1) a brief introduction paragraph with a thesis statement, (2) paragraphs\/subheadings that support the thesis, and (3) a strong concluding paragraph<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expound on what your resume cannot portray; try to complement your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 rather than repeat its content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider PAR (problem-action-result) or STAR (situation-task-action-result) stories <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be concise; make every sentence count<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be genuine; avoid trying to tell the story that you think the admissions committee wants to hear; your tone will likely show through&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be specific; more than half of BYU Marriott applicants are returned missionaries\u2014if you want your experiences to distinguish you from others, you will need to be specific about what you learned and how you changed, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain <em>how<\/em> your&nbsp;participation in clubs relating to your preferred major helped you&nbsp;become a better qualified candidate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlight your accomplishments; humility is a positive trait, however, you still need to showcase your strengths<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain positive outcomes; when telling stories about adversity, focus on what you learned or how you overcame those obstacles. Similarly, if you feel you need to explain low grades or a poor semester, do so in a positive, concise way without making excuses; e.g., include what you have learned and how you have changed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refer to recent accomplishments\u2014when possible emphasize college experiences over those from high school&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember that even entry-level or &#8220;unrelated&#8221; experience can be relevant to business. Analyze your experiences and apply business frameworks, principles, and terminology.
